The National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has concluded a five-day capacity-building workshop in Kano aimed at strengthening leadership within Nigeria’s basic education sector.
The training brought together head teachers, education officers, and junior secondary school principals from across the country to equip them with contemporary skills to improve the quality and efficiency of school administration.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Acting Director-General of NIEPA, Dr David Shofoyeke, who was represented by Dr Sunday Agdebeson, stated that the initiative was designed to transform schools into inclusive, efficient, and future-oriented institutions. He noted that participants were expected, by the end of the programme, to understand the traits of effective school management and to apply recognised administrative principles in their professional roles.
Dr Shofoyeke further acknowledged persistent challenges in the education sector, including inadequate teacher training, ineffective resource management, and the need for stronger instructional leadership.
In her remarks, the representative of UBEC, Hajiya Zainab Jingis, described the workshop as both timely and strategic, stressing the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to educational improvement through capacity-building and support for stakeholders.
Participants from the North-West, North-Central, and South-West geopolitical zones expressed their appreciation for the training. They pledged to apply the knowledge they acquired in their respective schools to achieve better educational outcomes.
