Niger Sets Committee to Address Medical School Accreditation Gaps

The Niger State Government has inaugurated an Inter-ministerial Committee to work with Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, addressing gaps identified during a recent pre-clinical and advisory accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The committee, comprising representatives from the Ministries of Health, Tertiary Education and Works, the State Bureau of Public Procurement, and IBBUL, is tasked with reviewing the MDCN report and recommending immediate, medium, and long-term actions to ensure full compliance with medical education standards.

Chaired by Dr Umaru Isah, Managing Director of the Niger State Hospital Management Board, the team paid a courtesy visit to the University management, underscoring the government’s urgency to safeguard the College of Health Sciences’ accreditation status.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Salihu Mohammed Niworu, welcomed the initiative, describing it as “timely and strategic.” He assured the committee of the university’s cooperation, noting that internal reviews on infrastructure, staffing, and laboratories had already begun.

The MDCN evaluation, led by Prof. Idris Muhammad of Bayero University Kano, lasted 48 hours on campus and assessed facilities and academic structures. The council’s observations must now be addressed ahead of a follow-up visit in six months, which will inform the committee’s work.
