Tosin Alabi, an MBA student at Syracuse University, has developed an innovative solution to address the growing global issue of diabetic foot ulcers.
Inspired by the painful experience of watching her father have diabetes, Alabi has developed a pair of “smart socks” that use wireless sensors to detect early signs of diabetic foot ulcers, potentially saving lives and preventing amputations.
Diabetic foot ulcers are open wounds that can lead to severe complications, including amputations and death if left untreated.
Alabi’s bright socks, which have already received a provisional patent, feature sensors that monitor the temperature, moisture, pressure, and inflammation of the feet.
This data is sent to a mobile app, which alerts the patient’s doctor if an in-person appointment is needed. The technology also predicts where an ulcer might form, allowing for timely medical intervention.
Alabi, whose father died from diabetes complications, was driven to create this life-saving technology after experiencing the devastating impact of the disease on her family.
In addition to winning numerous pitch competitions, including a $25,000 first-place prize at the prestigious Orange Tank competition, she has raised $40,000 to fund her healthcare startup, Diabetic.
She has also been involved in Syracuse University’s entrepreneurial community, where she has received invaluable mentorship to refine her ideas.
With diabetes on the rise worldwide, Alabi’s vision is not only to make an impact through innovation but to offer a preventive solution that can significantly improve the lives of diabetic patients.
The bright socks are just the beginning, and Alabi plans to expand her product line to include portable devices, further supporting those affected by the disease.
