OAU Unveils AI Devices to Boost Healthcare

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has introduced new AI-powered devices designed to transform the face of healthcare in Africa.

The products, created under the school’s spin-off company OAK.io, include the X55 smartphone and the FitBand X1 smartwatch. Both gadgets come with built-in artificial intelligence tools that can be used for healthcare checks, crop monitoring, and even education. They are expected to be available in the market by early 2026.

The launch was held during OAU’s “AI & Robotics in Clinical Practice Symposium,” with the theme Transforming Healthcare: AI-Driven Solutions for Nigeria’s Medical Future. The event showcased how locally developed technology can help address Africa’s health challenges while also positioning the continent on the global tech map.

According to the university, the project shows its commitment to turning research into real-life solutions. By putting AI into everyday devices, OAU hopes to make healthcare tools more affordable and accessible to people in Nigeria and beyond.
