OAU Launches Virtual Institute to Tackle Campus Sexual Violence

A new initiative to strengthen student-led responses to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) has been launched at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The eight-week Next Gen Nexus Virtual Institute on Sexual Violence Response, Leadership, and Advocacy is organised by BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights in collaboration with OAU’s Clinic for Human Rights, with support from the African Women Development Fund.

The programme, which began on October 6, brings together 50 female undergraduates for training in leadership, advocacy, and gender justice — part of efforts to shift the fight against SGBV from awareness campaigns to coordinated student-led action.

Participants will design and execute mini-advocacy projects addressing sexual harassment and discrimination within their university communities.

Organisers said the initiative marks a new model for engaging students as first responders and peer advocates in tackling sexual violence in higher institutions.

The facilitators include gender rights and youth protection experts from BAOBAB and partner organisations.
