Ambassador Wole Akanni Duro Ladipo, one of Nigeria’s leading cultural advocates, has been awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities by the United Graduate College and Seminary International in the United States.
The award recognises his decades of work in cultural diplomacy, heritage preservation and tourism promotion. The institution praised him as a “pioneer of purpose-driven cultural diplomacy” and highlighted his “Authorship Education” philosophy, which draws on indigenous storytelling and craftsmanship. Born in Ibadan in 1969, Duro Ladipo is the son of the dramatist Duro Ladipo, whose plays Oba Koso and Moremi remain landmarks of Yoruba theatre. Building on that legacy, he has staged productions worldwide and worked with governments and traditional rulers to promote African culture as both a heritage and a development asset.
Through his platform, First Eye Concept, he has spearheaded international projects on peacebuilding and cultural exchange. In 2014, he was named Cultural Ambassador by King Jose Mendes of São Paulo, Brazil. At the ceremony in the US, attended by diplomats and scholars, Duro Ladipo was commended for deepening intercultural dialogue and inspiring new generations of cultural thinkers.
