The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been selected as the Sports Centre of Excellence for Nigeria’s South-South region, following a presidential directive to boost sports development across the country.
As part of this move, UNIBEN’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, has been appointed to serve on a high-powered Ministerial Committee. The committee was set up by the Federal Ministry of Education to improve sports education and infrastructure in tertiary institutions.
In a statement released by Mrs. R.G. Ilyasu on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, the committee will focus on reviewing and updating sports courses and curricula, upgrading sports facilities, and encouraging physical fitness among students nationwide.
The Federal Ministry of Education is working with the National Sports Commission to carry out this assignment. UNIBEN’s recognition marks a significant step in making universities key drivers of national sports development and talent discovery.
