David Mualen, a Nigerian doctoral researcher at Ohio State University, has developed a groundbreaking technology set to revolutionise global healthcare.
His co-authored study, Experimental and Computational Investigation of Mixing Relevant to Real-World Challenge, introduces millifluidic jet-mixing reactors capable of producing nanoparticles at a kilogram-per-day scale while maintaining precise particle control.
Mualen said the innovation could make high-quality drug-delivery systems more affordable and accessible, particularly in developing countries where shortages of medicines and high costs persist. “Science should be a tool for human progress, not a privilege for a few,” he said, highlighting the potential impact on millions of patients worldwide.
Beyond healthcare, the technology could support sustainable agriculture by enabling controlled-release fertilisers and agrochemicals that reduce environmental impact and improve crop efficiency. Mualen credited his supervisor, Prof. Winter, for encouraging him to consider the real-world applications of his research.
Growing up in Ghana, Mualen experienced firsthand the shortage of medical supplies, which motivated him to focus on innovations that strengthen healthcare systems.
He said, “The future of healthcare is nano, and this research is not just about particles—it is about improving lives, reducing costs, and creating a more equitable world.”
