The Federal Government has officially licensed the Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (IBUAM), marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s aviation education sector.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) presented the operational license to the university on April 30, 2025, in Abuja, following approval by President Bola Tinubu during a Federal Executive Council meeting held on March 3, 2025.
Founded by renowned aviator and former National President of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, Isaac Balami, IBUAM is Nigeria’s first private university dedicated to aeronautics and management.
Located in Lagos, the institution aims to transform Nigeria into a hub for aircraft manufacturing by producing world-class aeronautical professionals.
Balami revealed that students will graduate with dual certifications from the Nigerian Universities Commission and global aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream, and Embraer.
The curriculum includes 7,000 to 10,000 hours of practical training on live aircraft at the university’s Lagos-based hangar, preparing students for European and Nigerian civil aviation licenses.
“Our students will not just learn theory—they will clock 7,000 to 10,000 hours on live aircraft in our Lagos-based hangar and graduate with European and Nigerian civil aviation licenses. By the grace of God, Nigeria will soon witness its first indigenously built aircraft, constructed by our youth,” Balami said.
International interest in IBUAM is already building, with representatives of 88 foreign student recruitment agents confirming inquiries from European and American parents. The establishment of IBUAM is viewed as a crucial step in reviving Nigeria’s once-thriving aviation legacy and positioning the country as a key aviation hub in Africa.
