Prof. Abdulhameed Danjuma Mambo
Nile University has held its 5th inaugural lecture themed, “Beyond Concepts and Concrete: Pathways for Advancing Sustainable Buildings and Infrastructure in 21st Century Nigeria.”
While delivering the lecture, Prof. Abdulhameed Danjuma Mambo, the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, mentioned that Nigeria has a housing deficit of 28 million units. He stated that Nigeria’s population will be 400 million by 2025, while an average of 75% of the current buildings will no longer meet the standard construction requirements.
Mambo lamented, “Where will these millions live, work, and thrive? The dominant reliance on imported designs and materials, often unsuitable for our local climate, has led to overdependence on artificial cooling, further straining our fragile energy grid.”
Offering solutions developed in collaboration with Loughborough University (UK), UN-Habitat, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the professor explained that incorporating palm kernel shells into concrete, utilising plastic waste in building materials, and utilising treated sisal fibres can help construct sustainable houses.
