NLA President Urges Librarians to Embrace Emerging Technologies

Dr. Lawal Umar, President of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA)

The President of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Dr Lawal Umar, has reaffirmed the central role of cataloguing, classification and indexing in practical librarianship.

Represented by the Association’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Sylvester Ebhonu, Dr Umar delivered his goodwill message at the 45th Annual Seminar/Workshop of the Cataloguing, Classification and Indexing Section, held on October 27, 2025, at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.

He noted that cataloguing and classification remain the foundation of library services and stressed the need for librarians to adapt to the rapidly evolving information landscape by acquiring new competencies in metadata management, linked data, and digital cataloguing tools.

Umar also reiterated his administration’s commitment to continuous professional development, emphasising regular training and retraining to ensure librarians remain competitive and relevant.

He commended the section’s leadership, led by Dr R.O. Odunale, for sustaining the tradition of knowledge sharing. The event featured keynote speaker Prof S.O. Uwaifo, Dr Nelson Edewor as LOC Chairman, and other experts who discussed trends and challenges in knowledge organisation.
