The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all public sector unions across the country to take immediate and coordinated action in response to the federal government’s continued delay in paying outstanding wage award arrears to federal workers.
In a letter marked “URGENT” and signed by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, the Congress expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to fully offset the arrears, despite repeated engagements by labour leaders. The directive was issued to the Presidents and General Secretaries of public sector unions nationwide.
“This serves as a kind but urgent reminder,” the letter reads, “concerning the unresolved issue of *Arrears of wage award for federal workers*,” urging union leaders to remain actively engaged and escalate actions if necessary.
Comrade Ajaero emphasised the need for a stronger collective response, warning that the movement stands at a critical juncture where unity and decisive action are essential. He called on all unions to submit progress updates by the end of May to guide the next steps.
“If the federal government fails to meet this demand,” Ajaero declared, “we must all work together to compel compliance.”
The NLC’s call signals a renewed push for accountability, with unions now expected to intensify pressure to ensure workers receive what they are owed. The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that past sacrifices by the labour movement will not be in vain. The letter ends with a rallying appeal for solidarity: “We count on your usual commitment and passion in this struggle.
