On May 20, 2025, about 500 farmers in Oyo and Osun States benefited from an agricultural training programme organised by the NNPC Foundation.
The event took place at Ilora Baptist Grammar School in Ilora, Oyo State.
The NNPC Foundation oversees NNPC Limited’s social responsibility projects, focusing on education, health, the environment, and energy access.
This training is part of their commitment to improve food security and empower farmers economically.
Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the Foundation, represented by Dr Bala David, explained that the project aims to help farmers become more resilient, increase productivity, and adopt sustainable farming practices.
The Foundation plans to train a total of 6,000 farmers across six zones in modern farming techniques, climate-smart practices, access to quality inputs, and market opportunities.
Farmers were encouraged to take full advantage of the training to help secure Nigeria’s food future.
Oyo State’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, praised the Foundation’s efforts.
Represented by Mr Olusegun Ezekiel, Olaleye highlighted that the programme fits well with the state’s agricultural development plans under Governor Seyi Makinde.
He urged farmers to apply what they had learned and called for ongoing collaboration between the Foundation and the state ministry to maximise the impact.
Professor Daniel Ozok, the training consultant, described the participants as small-scale farmers, often women, youth, and elderly individuals, with farms of under five hectares.
These farmers are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, making focused training critical.
The knowledge shared will help them improve their productivity and better access markets.
Many farmers expressed gratitude for the training and promised to use the new skills to improve their farms and livelihoods.
