The NNPC Limited/FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture, in collaboration with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), has concluded a teacher training workshop as part of its education technology donation initiative, aimed at enhancing digital learning in the Niger Delta.
According to a statement by FIRST E&P, the training was held at the NCDMB Complex in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and equipped 180 teachers from six oil-producing states—Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Abia, and Imo—with the skills to use the K-YAN all-in-one digital teaching and learning devices effectively.
The K-YAN device is a multimedia educational tool, pre-loaded with curriculum content from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary 3, designed to support interactive classroom instruction.
“Each participating school received two K-YAN devices and accompanying solar power solutions, bringing the total number of devices distributed in this phase of the programme to 200,” the statement noted.
It added that the initiative builds on the success of the first phase implemented in 2023, during which 100 K-YAN devices were distributed to secondary schools.
The programme forms part of the Joint Venture’s broader commitment to improving education in its host communities, with a focus on enhancing teaching capacity and learning outcomes through technology-enabled solutions.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Corporate Services at FIRST E&P, Mr Emmanuel Etomi, represented by the Nigerian Content Officer, Nkem Aghadiuno, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to educational development in the region.
He said the initiative aimed to equip today’s students, who are regarded as future leaders, with the tools to compete in a rapidly changing world. By integrating K-YAN technology into classrooms, he added, the company was helping to transform education and improve learning outcomes.
“This second phase of the initiative reinforces our long-term commitment to enhancing education in our host communities through technology-enabled teaching,” he said.
Also speaking, the General Manager of Capacity Building at NCDMB, Mr Timbiri Augustine, commended the programme, describing it as aligned with the Board’s mandate.
He stated that the training initiative, organised in partnership with FIRST E&P, was aimed at equipping teachers to prepare better students, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education—an area critical to the modern oil and gas industry.
“We remain committed to partnering with organisations like FIRST E&P to build capacities that support the long-term growth of the sector,” Augustine said.
Sharing her experience, Blessing Unuafe, a Physics teacher from SBSS Community Secondary School, Rivers State, expressed gratitude for the training, describing it as a rewarding experience.
“Before now, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to learn how to use this kind of technology. The K-YAN device will not only make my teaching easier, but it will also make learning more engaging for my students. I believe it will spark their curiosity and enthusiasm in the classroom,” she said.
The statement concluded that through this initiative, the NNPC/FIRST E&P Joint Venture continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and educational advancement in host communities across the Niger Delta.
