Nokia has been chosen by Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V. (DFN) to upgrade its national research network with an energy-efficient, high-capacity IP infrastructure.
The new system, which replaces outdated equipment, will enhance the network’s bandwidth and capacity, offering speeds of up to 800 Gigabits per second.
This improvement will ensure faster and more efficient data transfer for researchers across Germany, connecting about 850 institutions.
The upgraded IP core network, powered by Nokia’s 7750 Service Routers, is expected to reduce energy consumption by 75%.
The deployment also includes migration of existing applications, with plans to expand to even higher speeds as demand grows.
Dr. Stefan Piger, DFN’s Head of Network and Communication Services, praised the solution, stating that it offers the scalability necessary for future growth.
Nokia’s Matthieu Bourguignon noted the project’s impact on enhancing communication among Germany’s scientific community and its capacity to scale with future needs.
DFN’s network is among the largest non-commercial research networks globally, with over 10,000 km of fibre connecting major academic and research institutions across Germany.
