The Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Professor Garba Sharubutu, has announced that all research institutes in the country are now mandated to establish spin-off companies to commercialise their innovations and research findings.
This initiative improves agricultural productivity and ensures that research results are effectively transferred to farmers.
Speaking about the agricultural plans for the new farming season, Sharubutu explained that Nigeria’s farming calendar is divided into dry and wet seasons, with the wet season starting in March in most parts of the country, especially in the North. According to him, the previous farming season faced challenges, including the long dry spell, which led to weed control problems and slow crop growth. However, the return of heavy rains helped to salvage some crops.
The ARCN has been working to ensure that farmers are well-prepared for the upcoming season through sensitisation and advice, particularly through the extension units of the research institutes.
Sharubutu also discussed the role of the new national e-extension platform, which allows farmers to access vital information and weather updates via their mobile phones.
He emphasised the need for farmers to regularly consult with extension workers to stay up-to-date with the latest agricultural practices.
Regarding commercialising research and innovations, he highlighted the approval of research institutes to set up spin-off companies. These companies will focus on marketing and distributing the products developed by the institutes, such as seeds and vaccines. He pointed out that this move would help ensure that valuable innovations reach farmers directly, rather than remaining unused on shelves.
In addition, the ARCN has made progress in expanding its infrastructure. New buildings have been constructed, including a resource centre, a veterinary clinic, and a five-storey building that will serve as the council’s corporate headquarters. These facilities will support local and international partners, providing office space and accommodation for researchers and industry professionals.
