Ilorin hosted the 49th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) this week, where the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) unveiled a pilot cold storage system designed to reduce post-harvest losses and improve food distribution across the country.
The conference, themed “Next-Generation Food Science and Technology Solutions for Nation Building,” brought together leading academics, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to showcase innovations in food production, storage, and safety. The pilot system, introduced by Professor Lateef Oladimeji Sanni, the Executive Director of NSPRI, integrates nanotechnology and advanced cold chain management to extend the shelf life of perishable products.
Professor Sanni highlighted the project’s potential to strengthen national food security and support sustainable agricultural practices, noting that the initiative is part of NSPRI’s wider strategy to modernise Nigeria’s food supply chain. Key sessions also addressed food policy development, climate-smart agriculture, and emerging technologies for reducing losses in storage and transport.
Delegates emphasised that practical solutions, such as the cold storage pilot, combined with evidence-based policies, are critical for achieving a resilient and self-sufficient food system. The conference emphasised the importance of translating research into practical applications to address Nigeria’s food challenges and enhance outcomes for both farmers and consumers.
