UNIZIK Female Soccer Team
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) female football team recorded an emphatic 2–0 victory over the University of Lagos (UNILag )in their Group D encounter at the ongoing 27th Nigeria University Games (NUGA) in Jos.
The victory marked a strong comeback for the Awka-based side, who were eliminated by UNILag in the quarter-finals of the last NUGA edition held at the University of Lagos.
UNIZIK was initially scheduled to face Niger Delta University (NDU) in their opening fixture, but the opponents failed to show up, handing the team a walkover victory.
UNILag began the match on the front foot, pressing high and dominating the early exchanges, but UNIZIK gradually settled into rhythm and began to dictate play. Their persistence paid off when Chidinma Okoye (jersey number 11) opened the scoring with a stunning free kick from the left flank midway through the first half.
In the second half, Favour Amaka doubled the lead with a composed finish after a defensive mix-up from the UniLag side, sealing the win for UNIZIK.
Speaking after the match, UNIZIK captain Chris Ojukwu described the victory as payback for their previous loss to UNILag.
“We started the game with tension, but I told my girls to stay calm. This same team beat us on penalties at the last NUGA in UNILAG, so we came prepared,” she said. “Once we settled, we dominated possession and controlled the tempo. Our mindset is simple — it’s either we win or we win.”
UNIZIK’s assistant coach, John Anyalewechi, praised his players’ tactical discipline and confidence.
“It was an end-to-end match, but we managed their pressure and took our chances,” he told Campulse News.
“We came here to prove we are better prepared this time. If we could handle UNILag, I don’t think any team can stop us from going for gold.”
With the win, UNIZIK moves top of Group D and will look to maintain momentum as the women’s football event progresses.
