Taekwando Fighters at the 27th NUGA In Jos
Niger Delta University (NDU) jumped to the top of the taekwondo medal standings at the ongoing 27th NUGA Games in Jos after securing three gold medals in the opening rounds. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) follows with two golds, while the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have one gold medal each as contests continue across the weight divisions.
Taekwondo Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria David, told Campulse News on Thursday that participation in NUGA taekwondo offers athletes a pathway to global exposure.

“Competing here can open the door to the World University Games, which carry a G20 ranking. Any athlete who qualifies from Nigeria and competes there earns a world ranking and could progress to the national or even Olympic team,” she said.
Victoria, who has coordinated NUGA taekwondo since 2014 and currently serves as Bayelsa State Taekwondo Chairman, South-South Representative and a board member of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, noted a drop in turnout compared to previous editions.
“In terms of participation, we need to step up the game,” she said.
According to her, accreditation and weigh-ins were conducted on 10 November, followed by the Poomsae events on 11 November. The Kyorugi (combat) rounds have since continued, with the -57kg female featherweight division underway. So far, 295 athletes from about 30 institutions are competing.
University of Jos (UNIJOS) athlete, Jeremiah Anthony, who defeated his opponent from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in the men’s Kyorugi on Thursday, described his bout as exciting.
“The match was really fun. I learned new things, and with this sport you learn every day, even when you fight someone you’re better than,” he said.
