NYSC Launches Free Health Outreach in Abia

Mrs. Gladys Adama, NYSC, Abia State Coordinator

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has launched its 2025 fourth-quarter Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) in Abia State, offering free medical services to residents of Umuorji-Ohanze, Obingwa Local Government Area.
The outreach, held at Nkechi Hospital and Surgical Centre, was organised in collaboration with the hospital and the Onunwa Foundation, USA, targeting over 1,500 beneficiaries with consultations, treatments, surgeries, and medications.
NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Gladys Adama, described HIRD as the scheme’s flagship medical programme aimed at improving healthcare access for underserved communities. She urged residents to utilise the opportunity and commended Dr Chukwuemeka Nwakanma, CEO of Onunwa Foundation, for sponsoring the project.
Adama disclosed that doctors from the United States joined the corps’ medical personnel to deliver the services. She called on other stakeholders to support future health initiatives across the state.
Nwakanma, a former deputy governor, praised NYSC for deploying medical corps members for the programme, saying his foundation merely co-hosted and funded it.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, describing the intervention as timely and impactful in addressing the healthcare needs of their community.
