OAU Students’ Union Strikes Compromise in Accommodation Crisis

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has reached a compromise with students affected by the accommodation crisis in its halls of residence, following days of uncertainty and agitation.

The Students’ Union stated that the issue had primarily affected students whose academic schedules extend beyond the standard calendar, particularly those in the Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP), the Industrial Training (SIWES) scheme, and those preparing for ICAN examinations. Faculties of Technology, Computing Sciences, and Environmental Design and Management (EDM) were among the hardest hit.

Union leaders explained that they deliberately delayed issuing a public statement while engaging university authorities to secure concrete agreements. “We wanted to avoid misinformation and ensure transparency,” the Central Executive Council said in an address signed by the Union President, Secretary-General, and Public Relations Officer.

The Union announced that SWEP students across affected faculties would now be accommodated under special arrangements. Details of the agreement, it added, would be passed directly through faculty leaders to ensure clarity.

While the compromise offers relief to many, the Union warned it would continue to press management for lasting solutions, insisting that no student should be left stranded on campus.
