Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has signed into law a bill elevating the position of Principal-General in the state’s education sector to the rank of Permanent Secretary.
The legislation, introduced by the Minority Leader of the House of Assembly, Lukman Adeleye, provides for the prompt appointment of successors on retirement to ensure leadership continuity. It also mandates the formal gazetting of the Principal-General’s office.
The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) welcomed the law, describing it as a boost to the morale of teachers. State Chairman Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa said it restored dignity to the teaching profession and commended Adeleye for what he called “bold advocacy for justice and equity”.
Agbesanwa also praised the Speaker of the House, Daisi Elemide, fellow lawmakers, and the Commissioner for Education, Abayomi Arigbabu, for their contributions. He thanked the governor for assenting to the bill, describing the move as a fitting recognition for teachers ahead of World Teachers’ Day in October.
The new law follows other initiatives by the state government, including the provision of new vehicles for Principal-Generals in 2023.
