OneConnect, Smowltech Partner to Expand Online Examination

Technology firm OneConnect has partnered with Smowltech, the developer of the SMOWL proctoring platform, to deliver online examination monitoring tools to schools and universities across Africa.

The deal, announced on Thursday, is aimed at helping institutions tackle challenges such as poor connectivity, limited access to modern devices, and cheating in digital assessments.

SMOWL, already used by more than 250 institutions worldwide, is designed to work in low-bandwidth environments and supports older devices. It also integrates with platforms like Moodle, Blackboard and Canvas.

Motsei Mothoagae, Managing Executive at OneConnect Education, said: “Partnering with SMOWL gives our clients access to a proctoring solution that is technologically advanced and inclusive, addressing the connectivity challenges faced across the continent.”

Amref International University in Kenya has already deployed the system. Its ICT manager, Geoffrey Ng’ang’a, said the platform’s ability to run on limited infrastructure “has been a game-changer”.

Developers said the partnership would strengthen academic integrity and widen access for students in remote areas, while reducing reliance on paper and travel in line with UN sustainability goals.
