Bauchi State has launched its 2025/2026 school enrolment campaign in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and UNICEF.
The ceremony took place at Government Secondary School, Kirfi, headquarters of Kirfi Local Government Area.
State Commissioner for Education, Dr Muhammad Lawal Rimin Zayan, said the campaign would mobilise traditional rulers to support enrolment drives. He added that the government was rehabilitating old classrooms and constructing new ones to accommodate more pupils.
He noted that the initiative, alongside projects such as AGILE, would particularly expand opportunities for girls’ education.
UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, Dr Nuzhat Rafique, praised Governor Bala Mohammed for reducing the number of out-of-school children from 1.5 million to about 500,000. She warned, however, that the remaining figure was still too high. “Education is the right of every child. No child should be out of school,” she said, urging parents and communities to play their part.
Executive Chairperson of SUBEB, Adamu Mohammed Duguri, expressed concern that some parents were still reluctant to send children to school, undermining government efforts.
Officials said the campaign aims to consolidate recent progress and ensure all children of school age are enrolled.
