The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) chapter, has explained why it did not join Tuesday’s protest by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).
In a statement by its Chairman, Dr Yunusa Ganiyu, ASUU said the university management is already addressing the issues raised “with sincerity and best intentions.” The union maintained that dialogue, rather than protest, is the most effective means of resolving grievances.
The concerns, it noted, include the cancellation of the two-day work-free policy introduced during the 2023 fuel subsidy removal crisis and delays in pension remittances. ASUU stated that the management had paid special allowances to alleviate the hardship and is working to clear pension arrears.
It added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ayodeji Agboola, has kept an open-door policy and acted with “fiscal prudence and human sensitivity.”
However, SSANU and NASU accused ASUU of siding with management. Their Chairman, Adedeji Lamina, stated that the administration was employing “divide and rule tactics” and urged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to establish a visitation panel to address the alleged injustices at the university.
