Prof. Florence Obi, outgoing VC of the University of Calabar (UNICAL)
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, said she wants to be remembered for combating sexual harassment and ensuring the timely release of students’ results. Obi remarked during an event on Friday marking the end of her five-year tenure.
Appointed on September 10, 2020, and assuming office on December 1, 2020, Obi described protecting students, especially females, as one of her key achievements. “I fought against sexual predators and ensured the timely release of students’ results to curb frustration within the institution,” she said.
She thanked staff and students for their support, encouraged backing for her successor, and said she would return to teaching, her passion.
Under her leadership, UNICAL built the largest solar power plant in Cross River State, upgraded the Faculty of Education to a college, accredited and elevated Mass Communication to faculty status, constructed new hostels, established departmental scholarships, built a fire service station, and completed the Law Faculty complex.
