Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David Oyedepo, has advised researchers at the school to focus on research that produces tangible products and addresses real-world societal problems. He made this statement at the school’s 34th Inaugural Lecture, held on June 27, 2025.
Dr Oyedepo has warned against conducting research that ends up on bookshelves without benefiting anyone. He said Africa is facing many real problems that need practical solutions, not just ideas on paper. He encouraged the school to start using lectures and research to create things that can be sold or used in real life.
The lecture was delivered by Professor Akan Williams and focused on environmental pollution. He shared how his research has utilised natural materials, such as sugarcane peels, to clean up polluted areas. He also called on the government to bring back public health officers. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, praised the efforts and said the university is fully supporting clean environment projects and student involvement.
