The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) says artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to improve literacy and numeracy in its schools.
SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, revealed that the state partnered with German education firm EIDU to introduce AI-backed teaching methods in four pilot schools. He explained that the project has already boosted digital literacy among pupils and encouraged teachers to adopt modern teaching techniques.
“The system ensures uniform quality of teaching, so a child in a remote village now learns at the same level as one in an urban school,” Adeniran said. He added that enrollment has also increased, with some schools jumping from 70 to nearly 100 pupils as children are eager to use digital devices.
Adeniran warned that Nigeria faces a severe learning crisis, citing World Bank and UNESCO reports showing high learning poverty and millions of out-of-school children. He stressed that urgent reforms are needed to prevent a “lost generation.”
