The Oyo State Government has expanded its AI-powered basic education reform programme in partnership with global EdTech firm, EIDU, to all 33 local government areas after a successful pilot phase.
Launched in 2024, the initiative deploys affordable Android smartphones preloaded with EIDU’s offline-first learning platform to improve literacy, numeracy, and digital skills among pupils in Basic one to three. The technology delivers interactive lessons, adapts to each child’s pace using artificial intelligence, and provides teachers with structured notes, dashboards, and real-time performance feedback.
According to UNICEF (2022), 73 per cent of 10-year-olds in Nigeria cannot read or understand simple text. Oyo officials say the intervention is designed to tackle this “learning poverty,” especially in rural and underserved areas.
Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, stated that the programme has improved enrollment and learning outcomes.
“In schools where enrollment had been between 50 and 70 pupils, numbers rose to around 100 after the programme began. Teachers benefited too, with over 1,000 trained in the first phase and more than 3,000 in the second,” he said.
