The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) has expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to settle outstanding promotion arrears, amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship affecting workers nationwide.
Speaking at the union’s 78th General Executive Council meeting at Labour House, Abuja, National President Philip Ogunsipe highlighted delays in implementing new Schemes and Conditions of Service, as well as the unresolved renegotiation of the 2010 Agreement. He also lamented the non-release of 2023 NEEDS Assessment Funds, earmarked for infrastructural development in polytechnics.
Ogunsipe criticised the National Board for Technical Education’s unilateral submission of revised Schemes of Service to the Federal Ministry of Education, describing it as a breach of trust with labour unions. He cited outstanding arrears, including promotion arrears, salary review backlogs, wage awards, and incomplete implementation of the new national minimum wage.
Appealing directly to President Bola Tinubu, Ogunsipe warned that continued neglect of staff grievances could spark industrial unrest. National Secretary Nura Gaya called for decisive government action while urging members to remain committed to their duties. National Trustee Godwin Ikhide stressed the importance of labour unity in pursuing shared goals.
SSANIP continues to advocate for improved welfare and working conditions for polytechnic staff, insisting that urgent intervention is needed to resolve long-standing financial and procedural disputes.
