Over 35,000 candidates have applied for admission into the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) and the University of Ibadan (UI) for the 2025/2026 academic session, far exceeding the two schools’ available slots.
At Unilorin, 21,971 candidates applied for approximately 13,000 admission spaces. According to Prof Kamilu Rauf, Director of the Computer-Based Test Centre, 20,220 applied through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and 1,751 via Direct Entry.
This marks an increase from the previous session, which had 15,946 UTME and 1,175 Direct Entry applications. Observers attribute the rise to Unilorin’s academic stability and uninterrupted calendar.
UI, Nigeria’s oldest university, received over 14,000 applications for fewer than 5,000 available slots. In the 2024/2025 session, the institution processed over 22,000 applications, offering 4,650 provisional admissions, with 4,215 candidates eventually enrolled.
Post-UTME screening for the current session has concluded, though final admission figures are pending.
