Prof. Fawehinmi Becomes University of Abuja VC

Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, officially assumed office as the 8th substantive VC of UNIABUJA


Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi has officially assumed office as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, succeeding Prof. Mathew Adamu, who served in an acting capacity since August 11, 2025.


His appointment was approved by the University’s Governing Council on November 7, 2025, after a competitive selection process.
Upon taking office, Prof. Fawehinmi thanked the university community and pledged to enhance academic standards, research output, innovation, and student experience.


He emphasised collaboration and funding initiatives to strengthen programmes and expand educational access within the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.


A renowned scholar in clinical anatomy and biomedical anthropology, Prof. Fawehinmi has over 30 years of academic and administrative experience. He holds a BMedSc in Anatomy and an MBBS from the University of Port Harcourt, an MSc in Medical Anthropology from the University of London, and a Doctor of Medicine (MD).


He is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, the Anatomical Society of Nigeria, the Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria, and the Academy of Medical Specialities of Nigeria.


The new Vice-Chancellor has begun consultations with faculty, staff, and student representatives to ensure a smooth transition and set priorities for the University’s strategic development.
