Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, the newly appointed VC of UNIABUJA
The appointment of Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has met with opposition from some professors.
The professors, operating under the Concerned Academic Stakeholders banner, mentioned that the appointment violates the existing eligibility criteria, which include holding a doctoral degree.
Following the appointment, the professors have insisted that the role be filled by a PhD, not a fellowship, and have urged the institution’s governing council to uphold the required standards for the position.
According to them, fellowships reflect advanced professional competence but do not certify research expertise, cross-disciplinary leadership, and scholarly contribution.
In addition, they requested that the governing council resolve the appointment issue by electing someone who meets the required qualifications.
