The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Engr. Dr Temitope John Alake says Nigeria and other developing nations are currently grappling with multiple crises across agriculture, energy, the economy, and the environment.
He stated this while delivering his welcome address at the Fifth Biennial International Conference of the Centre for Research, Innovation and Development (CRID) held at the institution.
Citing the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook (2025–2034), Alake noted that while food demand is expected to rise sharply in developing regions, access to nutritious food remains limited. He added that agriculture contributes about 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while energy shortages and environmental degradation continue to hinder development.
He emphasised that “science and innovation remain key catalysts for transformation,” highlighting the importance of precision agriculture, renewable energy, and data-driven planning.
Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, urged participants to translate discussions into actionable policies that improve lives, while keynote speaker, Hon. Bimbo Kolade, called for stronger government-academic-industry partnerships to tackle these challenges.
CRID Director, Dr Charles Ologunde, commended the conference’s impact, citing research breakthroughs such as the design of the FEDPOLAD 97.5 FM transmitter by a team led by Alake.
