Redeemer’s University, Ede, has introduced compulsory vocational skill training for all its students to discourage the growing trend of fresh graduates relocating abroad for greener pastures.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Akindele, announced this during a press briefing ahead of the university’s 17th convocation ceremony, where 185 out of 1,341 students will graduate with first-class degrees.
Akindele explained that the new policy will ensure every student graduates with two certificates — one in their main course of study and another in a chosen vocational skill.
He said the initiative aims to produce job creators rather than job seekers, helping graduates build sustainable livelihoods within Nigeria.
According to him, many of the nation’s brightest minds leave for foreign scholarships and rarely return, depriving the country of its best talents. The university hopes the skill programme will help reverse this trend and boost Nigeria’s human capital development.
