Reps Raise Alarm Over Poor Southeast University Roads

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has highlighted the dire state of access roads to universities in Southeast Nigeria, particularly at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri (AIFUEO).

Chairman Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC-Jigawa) called on the Federal Ministries of Works and Education, and state authorities, to urgently address the roads, noting that Obinze-FUTO Road is nearly impassable during the rainy season. He also emphasised the need for perimeter fencing and outsourcing campus security, citing the financial strain on university resources.

The committee observed that some institutions risked failing to admit students into newly accredited courses without extensions from JAMB.

Fulata assured that legislative interventions would follow to resolve the infrastructure and operational challenges raised.
