The Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, Isaac Zeb-Opibi, has assured that the institution will not close its satellite campuses despite recent criminal incidents affecting students.
The Emuoha campus recently experienced robbery attacks, prompting some students to demand relocation to the main campus.
Speaking at RSU’s combined 37th and 38th convocation briefing, Zeb-Opibi said the attacks were isolated and that the satellite campuses in Emuoha, Etche, Ahoada, and Sakpenwa were established with state government approval and for strategic purposes.
He noted that a town hall meeting involving community leaders, security agencies, and university officials is planned to address the security challenges.
While acknowledging that some elements in Emuoha have targeted students, the VC stressed that other host communities have been supportive. “With commitment from the community, governing council, and management, students and staff will be comfortable staying there,” he said.
On the upcoming convocation, RSU will graduate 13,242 students, 10,628 first-degree and 2,594 graduate students, celebrating both the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions.
Final classifications for first-class and second-class honours are expected to be confirmed on the convocation day.
