The Director General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, says Nigeria must embrace science and technology, including genetically modified (GMO) crops, to solve its food crisis.
Speaking in Abuja during a workshop for Islamic clerics, he said modern technology is essential to tackle food insecurity and climate change. The event, organised by NABDA and the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB), aimed to build trust and improve public understanding of biotechnology. Prof. Mustapha explained that by engaging religious leaders, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and others, NABDA hopes to improve awareness about safe and effective agricultural technologies.
He believes that using improved seeds and scientific methods will boost productivity and help farmers face current challenges. The DG warned that Nigeria cannot afford to ignore technologies that can ensure food supply and protect the future of its citizens.
