Scientists Capture First-Ever Image of Black Hole

In April 2019, astronomers achieved a historic breakthrough when the Event Horizon Telescope project released the first image of a black hole.

The picture showed a glowing ring of light surrounding a dark centre, depicting the supermassive black hole at the core of galaxy M87, located 55 million light-years away.

The achievement was the result of a global collaboration involving over 200 scientists and a network of radio telescopes spanning multiple continents.  By linking their instruments, researchers created a planet-sized virtual observatory capable of resolving the region near the black hole’s event horizon.

The image confirmed long-standing predictions of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, showing light distorted into a near-perfect circle by extreme gravity.

Beyond its scientific significance, the photograph resonated with the public, offering the first visual evidence of one of the universe’s most enigmatic phenomena.

The milestone has since been followed by further images, including the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. However, the 2019 discovery remains the defining scientific achievement of the century.
