The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday approved the second reading of a bill to establish the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Funtua, Katsina State.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Muntari Dandutse, was first read on February 6 and aims to create a specialised institution focused on medical and health science education.
Senator Dandutse explained that the university would be located in Funtua because of its central position, making it accessible to neighbouring states such as Zamfara and Sokoto.
He noted that the Funtua senatorial zone is yet to host a tertiary institution, which makes the location ideal for expanding educational opportunities.
The university is expected to provide training and skills in the medical field for students from the North-West region and across Nigeria.
This initiative will help address the growing need for skilled health professionals in the country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed that financial backing for the university has been secured from the Katsina State governor, ensuring the availability of necessary facilities and equipment.
Akpabio expressed hope that graduates from the institution will contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare sector and beyond.
