More Nigerian states and schools are beginning to stop the popular “sign-out” tradition, which used to be a joyful way for students to celebrate the end of school.
On July 24, 2025, Sokoto State banned the practice in all secondary schools, saying it often leads to destructive behaviour and damage to school property. Soon after, Imo and Ondo states also stopped graduation parties in nursery, primary, and junior secondary schools, explaining that the events put too much financial pressure on parents. Edo State has now joined with similar rules.
Even at the university level, the restrictions are spreading. On August 20, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State banned final-year “signing-off” examination celebrations. The school warned students that anyone who breaks the rule would face punishment. The tension became apparent when two female students were sent off campus for wearing shirts with a protest sign.
Government and school officials say the bans will help bring back discipline because some students use the celebrations as an excuse for indecent dressing and vandalism. However, not everybody agrees. Parents, teachers, and students are still divided on the matter, while some feel it protects values, others believe it kills a harmless tradition.
