Dr Komolafe, a Clinical Information Specialist, has urged clinical, technical, and administrative teams to integrate informatics into medical and nursing education.
Having studied information technology and currently working as a lecturer in health informatics, the educationist and technical expert emphasised that the integration will improve career employment in the health sector nationwide. According to his statement with TribuneOnline, the key is to introduce digital tools and data management skills to students and familiarise them with tools like stethoscopes.
He also noted that they must be knowledgeable about anatomy and should be able to log into realistic Electronic Health Record (EHR) simulations, navigate patient charts, and handle decision support prompts. Komolafe explained the overwhelming nature of clinicians’ duties. He explained how these health specialists transition from reviewing scans to ordering laboratory tests, jotting down notes, and relying on decision-support pop-ups.
Hence, students learning informatics alongside core subjects like pharmacology and physiology can make the workflow easier.
