The Federal Ministry of Education has launched the “Luminah 2030 Initiative,” which aims to tackle gender disparities in education and empower girls and women.
Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, disclosed this news at the inaugural technical committee meeting with state commissioners of Education in Abuja on Tuesday, assuring that the initiative will address challenges in girls’ education. Ahmad emphasised that the initiative will help eradicate long-term issues, such as poverty, cultural norms, and geographical isolation, that hinder quality education.
She went on to outline the layout for the stem phase of the project, which will target out-of-school girls aged 5 to 15 years, with a three-year curriculum that covers basic education. Ahmad also noted that the programme aims to address the reality of older girls who have failed to secure basic education or may have dropped out of school due to unforeseen circumstances.
The Bloom Phase, the next stage of the project, will target girls aged 15 to 18 years, providing a one-year space for them to complete their secondary school education or vocational training. The minister discussed inclusivity and called for the prioritisation of geographical zones with a high number of out-of-school girls. The Federal Government has also sought states’ support for building gender-sensitive classrooms.
