Stop Converting Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to Universities – Professor Arekete

Professor Samson Arekete, a Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence expert at Redeemer’s University, Ede, has advised the Federal Government to halt the conversion of polytechnics and colleges of education into universities.

Arekete, while delivering the 17th inaugural lecture of the university recently, expressed concern that such conversions were distorting the education system.

He stated that Nigeria’s current number of universities is adequate, and any new ones should be established and adequately funded.

The lecture, titled “Human-Computer Partnership: A Cure or A Curse?” highlighted the role of technology in modern education. Arekete warned that over-reliance on computers could diminish critical thinking and problem-solving skills, leading to widespread job displacement due to automation and artificial intelligence. However, he acknowledged the potential of human-computer collaboration to solve societal and industrial problems when used responsibly.

He further urged the government to stop importing computer products and instead focus on funding research and innovation across all tertiary institutions.

Arekete also called for the resolution of Nigeria’s power supply issues, which he said hinder technological advancements and research.
