Students of the Federal School of Surveying in Oyo State have endured the deplorable state of their school hostel for several years, but recently they decided they had had enough and cried out for help.
A recent visit by Nigeria Education News showed that the hostels have cracked walls, leaking roofs, broken windows, and no steady electricity or water supply. Some students say that the poor living conditions have become a constant source of distress. One student said they use power banks to study at night due to frequent blackouts. Another complained about having to walk a long distance just to fetch water. Many toilets and bathrooms are damaged, and some hostels have only one working toilet for the use of many students.
Because of the problems, some students have moved off-campus, even though it is more expensive.
Attempts to speak with the school’s management were unsuccessful, but staff members acknowledged that renovation requests had been overlooked due to a lack of funding. Students are now begging the federal government to rescue their hostels and restore dignity to their learning environment.
