In Oyo State, an increasing number of students are combining formal education with vocational training to strengthen their future careers. Many now dedicate after-school hours and weekends to learning trades such as tailoring, Aso-Ofi weaving, mechanics, and hairdressing.
Findings from a recent study show the trend is most prominent in Oyo, though it is also common in Lagos, Osun, Ondo, and Ogun.
Students see the approach as a way to secure practical skills alongside academic qualifications. “I get tired most times after work, but it does not affect my school,” said an SS3 student in Iseyin.
Another student learning Aso-Oke weaving explained, “It helps me earn extra money, and I still focus on my studies.” While the development seems acceptable, Education experts warn of possible downsides, as early exposure to income-generating activities may distract students from their studies.
