The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called for strengthened unity across Nigeria’s diverse religious and ethnic landscape, highlighting the role of education in fostering social cohesion.
Speaking this week, the Sultan reflected on his long-standing commitment to national peace and development, citing recent engagements with universities, religious leaders, and civic institutions as part of his ongoing efforts. He referenced his recent role as Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and his participation in initiatives such as the University’s Alumni Association Excellence and Awards Ceremony, where he urged graduates to uphold the values of integrity, leadership, and national service.
“The strength of our nation lies in our ability to embrace diversity and work together,” the Sultan said, emphasising collaboration across religious and cultural divides. “Institutions of learning play a critical role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and promoting unity among citizens.”
The Sultan, recently honoured as the first-ever Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, has also supported educational and technological initiatives, including ICT training centres and youth mentorship programmes. Analysts say his interventions provide a rare example of a traditional leader leveraging influence to advance education, national cohesion, and sustainable development.
Observers note that with Nigeria facing social and economic challenges, the Sultan’s advocacy for unity and educational empowerment remains highly relevant, offering a leadership model that bridges tradition and modernity.
