The University of Tasmania’s Climate Futures research group will lead a major project to deliver updated climate projections for Tasmania, backed by $1.8 million in state government funding. The initiative, led by climate impacts specialist Dr Kathleen Beyer, aims to produce high-resolution forecasts tailored to the island’s complex terrain and ocean-influenced climate.
The project will combine expertise in climate modelling, geography, marine and Antarctic research, and science communication. Outputs will guide government, industry, and communities in planning, infrastructure, agriculture, natural resource management, and disaster resilience.
“This funding allows us to generate projections that reflect local conditions and support practical decision-making,” Dr Beyer said. The work builds on the 2010 Climate Futures for Tasmania project, incorporating advances in global modelling, computing power, and regional climate representation.
The project begins later this year and is expected to conclude by late 2027.
