The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), has announced that the institution’s Faculty of Law has the highest number of PhD. Holders among law faculties in Nigeria. He made this known on Monday, June 16, 2025, during a postgraduate retreat held at the University Auditorium Basement. Prof. Egbewole, who also teaches at the Faculty of Law, praised the efforts of the staff and encouraged them to improve postgraduate programmes to serve students and society better.
He advised the faculty to revise its curriculum to make learning more useful to the public and to inspire more students to pursue PhD degrees. The Vice Chancellor described the retreat as a crucial step in the University’s goal to enhance the quality of its postgraduate education. He emphasised the importance of students completing their studies on time, without unnecessary delays. The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Nimah Modupe AbdulRaheem, stated that the retreat provided an opportunity to reassess how postgraduate programmes are managed. She urged staff and students to focus on better supervision, updated teaching methods, and improved research.
Furthermore, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Bamidele Owoyele, called for regular updates to the curriculum, the use of Artificial Intelligence, and stricter rules to ensure students complete their studies on time. He warned against poor supervision, extortion, and delays that hurt students’ progress.
Prof. Owoyele praised the Law Faculty for its high enrollment in LL.M. and PhD programmes. Programmes and for developing new courses. He also applauded its role in helping UNILORIN qualify for the TETFund Academic Staff Training, which is awarded to only 18 universities in the country.
