The University of Ilorin has conferred the Award of Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Management and Leadership on the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in recognition of his contributions to national development and public service.
The award was presented during the university’s first Distinguished Lecture and Conferment of Award Ceremony held at the institution’s auditorium. Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also received an honorary fellowship at the event attended by government officials, traditional rulers, academics and students.
The ceremony featured the unveiling of the Adegboyega Oyetola Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy, established to promote research, innovation and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Delivering the maiden lecture titled “The Nexus between Blue Economy and Higher Education for Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” Oyetola said the blue economy offered a pathway for inclusive and sustainable growth.
He noted that Nigeria’s vast coastline and waterways held immense potential for economic diversification, job creation and food security, adding that sectors such as maritime transport, fisheries and renewable ocean energy could strengthen the nation’s GDP if properly harnessed.
